Question

Asked 4/21/2010

I have a Shunt in my brain, from a T.B.I. 31yrs. ago, my head always hurts.

It feels like a throbbing pain, a 5 on the scale of 1-10, most of the time. I've had MRI's and Brain Scans and nothing showed up abnormally. Is this all in my head or is it real?
I also have Ataxia on my right side from a left side T.B.I. 31 yrs. ago will that go away?
I had a Brain Stem Injury and was unconscious for 7-9mnths. to two years before I could piece anything together. I had to train my brain as a child does, crawling, jumping on a trampoline, swimming, weight lifting, lots of P.T.and O.T., graduated twice because they didn't know what to do with a head injury. I went to school and finished my credits with Government, Senior English, and typing, making a lot of errors while typing. I'm thankful that I got a chance to do it, they didn't expect me to live after being unconscious for 7-9mnths. and burning up with high temperatures. I was three years in a wheelchair until my shunt was replaced, then I could walk but losing my balance much of the time, I felt like a drunk! I know that God has brought me through this terrible accident, I guess I'm just questioning if there's a chance I'll regress and not be able to care for myself and my husband and young adult kids that I've been SO BLESSED WITH!

Answer 1/1 - Submitted 8/15/2010

I had a shunt put in place at age 14, probabaly resulting froma TBI 2-4 years earlier. Across the next 10 years, it would be revised 3 times. I have had chronic headaches all my life; I'm 42 now. I have managed them with non-prescription treaments like ibuprofen, caffiene (coffee) and cold treaments like ice packs. I think it's just a reality of a TBI. If you suffer with depression as a result of your TBI, I would highly recommend treating that too: there is nothing noble about experiencing life miserably.
