Are veterans with brain injuries being redefined by the government so they don't get cognitive services?

TBI or traumatic brain injury is being redefined as anxiety disorder

Absolutely not. TBIs are actual document injuries to the brain and have been brought to the forefront by medical advances that can now save soldiers being treated in field hospital raising the survival rate of those with head injuries. I do however think you are confusing this anxiety disorder with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Like the former names of shell shock, battle fatigue, battle exhaustion, etc PTSD has always been a non mental health disease but rather one that plays on human emotions that traumatizes an individual seeing or being exposed to abnormal situations relating to trauma. PTSD is not just a soldier's malady. Rape victims, police, firefighters , doctors and nurse can all come down with the syndrome that may stay with the victim for years. It is debilitating to say the least and can only be treated when medical professionals can identify the stressors that cause episodes from re-occurring.

Since most stressors trigger panic attack-like symptoms of anxiety, some yo-yo decided to take the traumatized out of the syndrome and rename the illness but like the Bard of Avon said, "A rose by any other name..." You can call it what you want but the VA is fighting both TBIs and PTSD with equal vigor.

While I agree that the government is fighting both by denying one or the other.... I think you will find that their funding of new and many neuroscience centers is redefining towards things that require less cognitive therapies and more applications of drugs. I'm not for sure how the top part of your answer fits with the bottom part.

When discharging veterans, sadly, they 'rediagnose' a lot of things in order to keep from paying benefits or giving them the psychological care and medical treatment they need. There are reports of soldiers with PTSD being discharged with 'personality disorder' rather than with PTSD, because a personality disorder - meaning the person fought all the time or caused problems - does not have to be treated or paid for after dismissal, whereas PTSD would require ongoing care, treatment and a veterans check every month.

My boyfriend was in the military for a number of years including three years, straight, overseas in Korea, Iraq and then another tour of Iraq without getting to go home between. He ended up with back injuries after a land mine exploded. They paid for the surgery and then tried to say the rest of his back injuries were not their fault and paid him only minimally every month. He's had to fight for 5 years now to get the benefits that he deserves for them injuring him. He also has PTSD, which is linked directly to his sleep apnea. They say that's not their fault either. Nothing else in his life, except being in a war zone two years straight, would have caused PTSD, but they are going to keep denying it and he's going to have to keep spending all of his free time fighting to make the government pay for what they owe him.

It's all about the bottom line. They don't want to pay for those who come back damaged in some way. And if they can sweep it under the rug or deny it, they will.
